My wife and I kayaked across from Westport this Spring on March 22nd to get a closer look at the Westport Light House. I had heard tales of it and my curiosity was in bad need of being quenched. As we slipped up in front of it a pair of buzzards were intently watching us. One from the confines of the top of the dilapidated building, and one who was gathering either nesting material or possibly food from the ground nearby. He quickly ascended up to what we then knew was his mate. They peered at us from atop of what remained of the lighthouse tower. I believe they had found a good but precarious nesting spot. I exited my kayak and went up for a closer look at the building. I saw no signs declaring no trespassing and it was obvious it had been abused and left to ruin for quite a long time. I looked into what used to be the windows and imagined what a wonderful place it must have been in its time. No man would dare tread foot inside now for the structure is not far from being just a heap of rubble. I did see hope for restoration if plans could be drawn of what’s left before its ultimate timely doom. The stone foundation is as sound as a new home, a tribute to the masons of its time.
I see the Historical society in Westport is doing their best to reclaim other buildings and I believe they at least need to get the basic plans drawn up on this one before its lost forever. This landmark has a noted history and should not be lost. Besides, its part of what Westport is all about and to see it across the river on a day like this day reminds us all of times that made this country what it is now!
The unfortunate thing about the lighthouse is that it is in Indiana regarding restoration grants- the current owner has been really generous with the information and photos that he gave to the history center. The cost of restoration would be several hundred thousand dollars however the foundation would could easily be saved- of course, it floods regularly too.
