“Women’s Work”
Paper Doll Quilts by Rebekka Seigel
Detailing the lives of 12 Inspiring Women of the 20th Century
Feb. 3, 2009- March 31, 2009
Kentucky quilt artist Rebekka Seigel created 12 quilts that detailed the lives of inspiring American women of the 20th Century. Using a paper doll theme, the quilts reflect the garments worn by these women for seminal moments in their lives. These women's stories are told in a unique manner through the garments they wore for defining moments in their lives or as a means of expressing who they are. The quilts invite interaction because they can be manipulated just like the paper dolls. The garments are tiny quilts themselves, attached to the main quilt, and can be manipulated to dress the doll.
The women who are represented in the quilts are: Ella Fitzgerald, Jean Ritchie, Rachael Carson, Mildred Babe Didrickson, Martha Graham, Eleanor Roosevelt, Louise Nevelson, Lucille Ball, Rachael Carson, Barbara Jordan, Margaret Meade, Lucy Martin Lewis, Pearl S. Buck and Maya Angelou.
In conjunction with the exhibit the Oldham County History Center has received a $1,200 grant for collecting oral histories of women of Oldham County who were “the first” to break the gender barrier in various jobs and positions. Over 12 oral histories will be taken and featured as a part of the exhibit.
The Oldham County History Center will host Tori Murden McClure as the featured speaker for a reception to honor Oldham County’s women achievers. McClure was the first person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
The reception and Murden’s talk will be on Saturday, March 21 at Noon at the Oldham County History Center. Tickets are FREE but must be obtained in advanced. Limit of 4 tickets for history center members, 2 tickets for non-members. Special tickets can be procured for youth groups. Call the Oldham County History Center for information at 502-222-0826. |
