Oldham County History Center receives $14,720 Grant for Research, Public Programs and Archaeology Institute for Youth

Lincoln Bicentennial Grant funded through the Ky. Heritage Council

The Oldham County Historical Society has received a $14,720 grant to continue its efforts for research and archaeological programs on the Henry Bibb Project. The grant supports artifact cataloguing, research and continued public participation at the Gatewood Site in Trimble County. The Henry Bibb Project began in 2004 with funds from the Ky. Heritage Council to explore an archaeology site. This site was the last place where Henry Bibb, slave, abolitionist, Separatist and editor, lived before his final escape to freedom. Henry Bibb published his slave narratives in 1848 that documented his experiences as a slave in Oldham, Trimble and Shelby counties.

The grant funds 2 Archaeological Institutes for students. The tuition is free and open to any students between the ages of 13-18. The enrollment is limited to 10 students per institute. Students get authentic, hands-on archaeological experience, working under the supervision of site archaeologist, Jeannine Kreinbrink. Each institute lasts for one week and includes a visit to the Freedom Center in Cincinnati to study the underground railroad and slavery issues that prevailed in the Ohio Valley prior to the Civil War.

The public archaeological programs are open to anyone but require registration by calling the history center. Children must be accompanied by adults
