2009 Juneteenth Celebration
“Voice of the Fugitive”
Premiere at Actor’s Theatre, May 29, 30 & 31, 2009
The Oldham County History Center is proud to announce its 2009 Juneteenth Celebration with the world premiere of “Voice of the Fugitive” at Actors Theatre in Louisville, KY. This production is based on the narratives of Kentucky slave, freed man, abolitionist and separatist, Henry Bibb. Bibb escaped the bonds of slavery and became an abolitionist and leader of the Separatist movement. He established a Refugee Colony for slaves in Canada and became the first black editor of a Canadian newspaper.
Friday evening: Wine and cheese reception with special demonstration by Hound Dog Press, 18th Century typesetter, Nick Baute. Meet playwright Carridder Jones, Director Laura Early and Actors. Playwright Carridder Jones will be signing copies of her new book: “A Backward Glance”. Presentation of the 2009 Elijah Marrs Award.
Sunday Matinee: Following the play: Special Panel Discussion: “Slavery, Kentucky and the Underground Railroad” featuring Henry Bibb Project Historian Diane Coon, Ante-Bellum and Civil War Expert Archaeologist Jeannine Kreinbrink and Kentucky Historian and Slavery Expert, University of Louisville Dean Blaine Hudson.
Friday night & Saturday night performances: 7:30 p.m.
