“Trials and Tribulations: a Glimpse at Oldham County’s Early Court Records Prior to 1850”
Continuation of the Souper Supper Series sponsored by the Oldham County History Center
History center volunteer archivist, Genie Fortunato, will discuss some of the most unusual and enlightening trials and court records that reveal the early court structure in Oldham County. According to Fortunato, the cases can be grouped into several categories: 1) Surveyor titles, 2) Profane swearing, 3) Assault, 4) Selling liquor without a license and public intoxication, 5) Theft, 6) Violation of ordinances, 7) Slave violations and 8) Murder cases. This interesting snapshot of early Americana life shows what life was really like at the beginning of our democracy as westward expansion was carving communities out of the wilderness. Courts were first held in people’s homes and court dates were determined by visiting judges whose circuits were regional and included numerous counties.
Cost of the program includes soup, bread and a delicious dessert. The program is scheduled for March 10, 2010, Wednesday Evening at 6 p.m.
Cost: $20.00 for history center members ($25.00 non-members) |
